Road network in India is far from being tagged as the safest in the world. While thousands encounter fatal accidents every year in the country, the count for non-fatal injuries is even greater. To address this problem, the government is now focusing on promoting and encouraging smart mobility in the country with an aim of reducing road accidents nationwide.
In a written message to the eighteenth International Road Federation (IRF) World Roads Meeting (WRM) 2017, Nitin Gadkari said, “The Ministry of Road transport stands committed to achieve 50 per cent reduction of road deaths in the country by 2020 as it is signatory to the UN (United Nations) decade of action for road safety. To achieve the goal of reducing fatal road accidents, government is all set to adopt newer smart mobility technologies, in the form of traffic and transport efficiency, customized mobility, environment friendly mobility and road safety.”
“Pursuant to the invitation extended by Ministry of Road Transport to the Transport Ministers of various countries at the Mid-Term Review Conference held in November 2015 at Brazil, the Government of India also proposes to hold global transport Ministerial Conclave on ‘Eradicating Road Deaths by 2030’ on November 13, 2017 in New Delhi, a day prior to WRM 2017” included Gadkari in his message.
The eighteenth IRF WRM 2017 will begin on November 14, 2016 and will be held till November 17, 2016, in Delhi. It is being organised jointly by the Geneva based IRF, a global road safety body, and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India.
